Class Notes 11/4

Today in class we continued our notes on linear regression. We learned how to find our best fit model by doing the math out on paper, and we also learned how to find the model by using our calculator. When we are given raw data, the quickest way to find our predictive model (best fit) is to use our calculator. We can plot the points with a scatter plot along with the regression line on our scatter plot.

We also talked about residuals and what it means to have a negative or positive residual. Before we jump into using the linear model we need to check that the residual plot does not have a pattern. If there is a pattern a linear model is not appropriate to use.

We also talked more about r and r^2 (r-squared). Make sure you understand what both of those mean.

Homework due Tuesday 11/8: Pg. 192 #1-13 odd, 21, 27-31 odd, 37, 41.

We talked about the basics of probability, saw how we can use events to help us understand the difference between theoretical probability and empirical probability. Theoretical is what we think the probability is (50-50 chance of getting a heads or tails when flipping a coin) compared to empirical (conducting trials, and seeing what the probability is from all of your trials combined not one group actually got 50% heads or tails).

We then worked on either the homework/group projects.
